Official welcome & invitation
From the Commissioner of the
Metropolitan Police Service
I am very pleased that the Metropolitan Police Service is to host the Special Constabulary National Conference next year which takes place between 19th - 21st March. The chosen venue for the conference near to Tower Bridge and the Tower of London is such an iconic location and I hope that you will find some time to visit our Capital city whilst you are here.
The theme of the conference is 'sharing the success of the Special Constabulary'. It will give delegates the opportunity to share best practice and to highlight examples from around the country, especially in town centres dealing with night time economy crime and disorder as well as the excellent work being done with Safer Neighbourhood Teams.
There can be no finer example of active citizenship than by members of the community coming forward to volunteer to support their local police. This event will showcase the selfless dedication of the Special Constabulary. I wish you all a successful and worthwhile conference.
Sir Paul Stephenson QPM
Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis
From the Chief Officer of the
Metropolitan Special Constabulary
I am delighted that the Metropolitan Special Constabulary together with the Metropolitan Police Service will be hosting the National Conference next year. The Commissioner's agenda for the Metropolitan Police Service is about cutting and solving crime, securing our streets, convincing all of London's communities that we are on their side and delivering the policing that the public wants.
The Metropolitan Special Constabulary forms a key part of that agenda - by stepping forward to represent their local area and Special Constables are at the forefront of delivering a Met Police Service that is truly engaged with the communities it serves. This ethos of course goes beyond the policing of the capital as Special Constables nationally are making a real difference in reducing crime, being visible and forging vital links with the communities they serve.
Martin Luther King said that, "Life's most urgent and persistent question is: What are you doing for others?" This conference will showcase examples of Special Constables who are successfully making that difference by voluntarily giving of their time to help others.
I look forward to seeing you all in March 2010.
Lorraine Woolley MBE
Chief Officer
Metropolitan Special Constabulary
